ROTARY CLUB OF MADRAS COROMANDEL - CLUB HISTORY
Rotary year 1988 - 1989
In the month of July 1988, an idea of extending Rotary activities for the benefit of the East Coast community covering Adyar, Besant Nagar, Tiruvanmiyur and southern outskirts of Madras city emanated from Rtn. P.P. Krishnan V. Chari of Meenambakkam club while strolling on the silver sands of Besant Nagar. The provisional Rotary Club of Madras Coromandel was, inaugurated on 23rd October 1988 by Rtn. PHF PDG. Dr. Sundararaman with Rtn. T. R.Krishnaswamy from Meenambakkam club as its charter President.
The club commenced its regular weekly meeting at the Adyar Cultural Academy on Sundays at 8.30 a.m. The Constitution and Bye-laws of the club were framed by charter President Rtn. T.R. Krishnaswamy and Late Rtn. Lt. Gen. C. Sundara Rao (Retd).
A historical event of the club was that it was chartered on 23rd Feb 89 which coincides with the day the first Rotary Club was started, by the Founder Rtn. Paul Harris. A Souvenir to commemorate the occasion was released and the Club’s first ever bulletin, ’Conch’, was published.
Rotary year 1989 - 1990
Rtn. Lt. Gen. C. Sundara Rao (Retd.) took over as President on 22nd July 89, at Hotel Trident. The club raised Rs.35,000/- for the club, by staging a Tamil Drama and also conducting a workshop “Be +ve; why not we? on Human Resources Development. Another notable achievement was the establishment of a charitable trust. The weekly meeting venue was Andhra Mahila Sabha.
Rotary year 1990 - 1991
Rtn. T.N.Sundaram who was installed as President at Hotel Trident on 8th July 90. Fund Raising committee headed by Rtn. N. Subramanian fetched a net amount of Rs.28,000. Polio Immunisation and Health Check Up Camp at St.Thomas Mount was arranged. Rtn. T.R.Krishnaswamy became the first Paul Harris Fellow of our club.
Rotary year 1991 - 1992
Rtn. S. Viswanathan was installed as President at Andhra Mahila Sabha Tourist Hostel on July 7th 1991
Pradhan Gaurav – a Club Service project to honour the Past Presidents and PDGs was conducted on 29th September at Vijaya Rani Mahal. It was the most talked event of the District at that time.
For the sake of Honour’ award was presented for the first time in the Club and Kavignar Subbu Arumugam was honoured.
Rotary year 1992 - 1993
Rtn. R. Rajagopal was installed as President on July 5th 1992. The year’s theme ’Let’s get closer” was realized. 100 sarees and 10 chairs were donated to “Vishranth” –a home for the aged. The club contributed US$ 10, 500 to Rotary Foundation. Ten PHFs and three PHSMs were added. The club’s contribution to the Rotary Foundation was the second highest in the dist. 3230. The 6th Tamil Nadu State Games for the Blind was cosponsored by our Club a project which was televised by Doordarshan and received wide publicity in the press. The Club was awarded “Merit Certificate” for the international service. Pres. R. Rajagopal received the “Distinguished Service Award” for the cause of Rotary.
Rotary year 1994 - 1995
Rtn. PHF. N. Subramaniam became our youngest President in 94-95. President Subbu’s dynamism and enthusiasm reflected by his bold decision to change the venue of our regular meetings to the Conference Centre. The fellowship committee bubbled with activity through – out the year.

Rotary year 1995 - 1996
Rtn. Dr. K. Ananda kannan became the President of the Club for the year 1995 – 1996. The club activities in the year included RYLA Camp, Health Check-up at Olcott Kupam and Avvai home.
Rotary year 1996 - 1997
Rtn. M. Uttam Chand took over as the President of the Club for the year 1996 – 1997. The club activities included provision of a Safe Drinking Water Tank for Primary School at Avvai Home. RCC was inaugurated. Guidance Seminar was conducted for the students of St.John’s School.
Rotary year 1997 - 1998
Rtn. R. Sankaranarayanan took over as the President of the Club for the year 1997-1998.
His contributions included Rotaract Club at MGR Janaki College - Adyar, Leprosy Detection Camp. Health Check up and Tree Planting at Govt. Ophthalmic Hospital.
Rotary year 1998 - 1999
Rtn. H.N. Panduranga Rao became the eleventh President of the Club for the year 1998 - 1999.
Installation at Hotel Sinduri. Affectionately called Polio Pandu, he successfully conducted the National Immunisation Camps for the eradication of Polio, in the Okkiam Thoraipakkam area. The club provided the school with compound wall and basic amenities to a girls school with application for first Matching grant. Vocational Excellence Awards were given to Dr. Yosadha Shanmugasundaram, Vice Chancellor of Mother Theresa Women’s university and Mr. V. Madhavaraj IPS.
Rotary year 1999 - 2000
Rtn. Dr. Hari Ramesh took over as the President of the club for the year 1999 – 2000. Installation function was held at Hotel Chola Sheraton. His contribution included the following:
Karna Vidya – a programme of reading to visually handicapped students from various colleges. It is an ongoing programme of our club. For the Sake of Honour Award was presented to Cartoonist Sri. Keshav.
Rotary year 2000 - 2001
Rtn. R. Ravi took over as the President of the club for the year 2000-01. Installation function was held at Hotel Savera. The club conducted sports event – “SPORTS CARNIVAL 2000” for handicapped students with the active involvement of Rotaractor. For the Sake of Honour Award was presented to Sri. S.K. Nagarajan, co-founder, Clarks school.
Rotary year 2001 - 2002
Rtn. Prof. Dr. Rajamohan was installed as the fourteenth President of RCMC at GRT Grand Days on 1st July 2001. During his stewardship, a mental health camp was organized at Anna Nagar on 22nd July 2001. Rotary Community Corps (RCC) was inaugurated on 15th August 2001 at Shastri Nagar.
Professional Excellence Awards were presented to Dr. K. Ananda Kannan, Vice Chancellor of Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Dr. K. Thiagarajan, the South Indian famed Journalist and the Founder of United writers Association and Mr. T. Devanathan, the MD of Win TV at a well-attended function held at TAG Centre on 23rd Feb-2002. Justice M.S. Janarthanam was the Chief Guest.
Rotary year 2002 - 2003
Rtn. S. Ramanathan was installed as the fifteenth President of the club for the Rotary year 2002 - 2003 on 7th July 2002 at Russian Cultural Centre auditorium. It was widely acknowledged that the profile of the guest speakers during the year was excellent which elevated the club to the top slot in club service in the District. The members with their families for the first time went for an outstation trip to Topslip game sanctuary. On International Service the club officially signed its first Sister club agreement with RC Colombo Regal (R.I.District 3220) before the presence of R.I. President Rtn. Bichai Rattakul at Colombo.
During the year the club conferred “For the sake of Honour Award” to Dr. Vijaya Bharathi Rangaraj Executive Director of Sundaram Medical Foundation and Vocational Excellence Award to Dr. Mrs. Nalini Rangarajan-Principal National public School in presence of Chief Guest Dr. E Balagurusamy Vice Chancellor Anna university.
Rotary year 2003-2004
Rtn. Ganesan Raja was installed as the sixteenth President of our club at hotel GRT Grand Days. An Annet’s club was inaugurated on that day. The first ever matching grant project of our club, viz:
Construction of toilet blocks, bore wells and overhead water tanks for the Okkiam thoraipakkam Govt. high School was completed. At interact club was installed in that school on that day.
Under the auspice of our prestigious Karna Vidya project three visually handicapped students were operated upon and their vision partially restored. A Library for the blind students was started at a donated place (thanks to Rtn. P. P. Ravi) in Gandhi nagar, Adyar. In recognition of their service to the cause of the blind students of karna vidya, Ann. Shyla vishwanatham and Ann. Shashikala Subramaniam were honoured by presenting them with Vocational Excellence Award for the year 2003-04.
For the sake of honour awards were given to Dr.S. P. Thiagarajan, Vice chancellor of Madras University and to Mr. M. Chandrasekaran, a great Violinist.
Rotary year 2004 - 2005
RTN. R. Narayanan was installed as the seventeenth president of the club for the Rotary centennial year 2004-2005 on July 4,2004 at Hotel Residency towers. To commemorate the centennial year, a new charitable trust was formed under the name and style RCMC CENTENNIAL CHARITABLE TRUST. The new trust raised funds of more than RS.4 lacks during the Rotary year. The club renovated the Primary panchayat school at okkiyam thoraipakkam by constructing a compound wall, urinals for the children, improving the noon meal kitchen and thereby giving a face lift to the other structures. The total cost of the project was Rs.2.25 Lacs. During TSUNAMI, the members of RCMC immediately swung into action and 375 kgs of rice, clothes and other materials were distributed.
Rotary year 2005 - 2006
Rtn. K. Kalyanasundaram was installed as the Eighteenth President of the club. On 7th October 2005 the club organized a musical evening featuring O. S. Arun, our new member, S Janaki and P.B. Sreenivas.
The proceeds amounting to Rs.3 lakh went towards sustaining the Karna Vidya Project. Software for the visually challenged, with Rs.1 lakh was donated by Rtn. PP. PHF. R. Ravi. The first ever music festival for the differently abled, titled “Parallel Music Fest” was held at the Music Academy, Main Hall on 8th December, 2005. The objective of the music festival was to provide a platform to the ’differently – abled” to showcase their talents. The RCMC Vocational Excellence Award was given to renowned nephrologists’, Dr. R. Ravichandran.
Rotary year 2006 - 2007
Rtn. PHF N. Srinivasan was installed as the 19th President on Sunday, the 9th July 2006. Tricycles were donated to physically handicapped under polio Rehabilitation Programme. A new club, Rotary club of Chennai Coastal was sponsored with Rtn N.S. Bala Mukundan as its Charter President. Braille
Printer was installed at Karna Vidya with the donation of US$ 5,000/- by Rotary Club of Providenciales, Turks &Caicos Islands, British West Indies. Dist. 7020. The Karna Vidya Library was upgraded with furniture, storage and other facilities. For the sake of Honour was conferred on Mr. Ranjit Narasimhan, CEO, HCL BPO.
Rotary year 2007 - 2008
Rtn. P. Sankaran was installed as the 20th President on 8th July 2007. Projects worth over Rs.8 lakhs were implemented. Some of the projects included setting up a unit each of solar powered water purifier gifted by Dutch NGOs at Avvai Home, the school at Okkiyam,
Thoraipakkam, donation of five computers by HCL for the Karna Vidya library, Slippers were given to 586 under privileged school students of Govt. Boys Higher Secondary School, under Project Selvi several girls of Avvai Home and Corporation School at Kamaraj Avenue in Adyar were trained in English and Computers. Rtn. Balasubramanian became the first major donor in our club.
Rotary year 2008 - 2009
Rtn. PHF Rm. Arunachalam was installed as the 21st President for the Rotary Year 2008-09 on 29th June 2008. The venue for the weekly meetings was changed to Madras Boat Club from Hotel Savera.
Fr. Jagath Gasper Raj was conferred with for the sake of honor Award on the Charter. A two day outbound fellowship was conducted at Yelagiri. Rtn. Freddy donated 27 Steel Racks to all classrooms in the school at Okkiyam Thoraipakkam.
Rotary year 2009 - 2010
Rtn. P. Thangamuthu was installed as the 22nd president of RCMC for the Rotary year 2009-10 on 5th July’10 together with his team of office bearers by DG W. Anand at Hotel Sabari Inn. Major donor Rtn. Balasubramanian donated Rs.5 lakhs to Project Blossom. RCMC was bequeathed a will to have title to the proceeds from the sale of a property worth Rs.18 lakhs at Adyar by Mrs. Shanta Subramanian, an aunt of Rtn. PP. Sankaranarayanan and a classical Carnatic musician after her time.
Rotary year 2010 - 2012
Rtn. Perkinian took over as president for the year 2011-12. Annet Ajay Narayanan won the unique distinction of joining the semester at sea students on their voyage to Chennai. PP Rtn. N. Srinivasan became a major donor by donating USD 10,000 and a total of USD 16,350 was donated to TRF this year. Infant Shreya Sandilya (3 months) granddaughter of Rtn. PP. PHF Ramanathan became the youngest PHF of the club. Fr. Jagath Gasper Raj was conferred with for the sake of honor award on the charter nite which was celebrated on 5th April 2009.
Rotary year 2012 - 2012
Rtn. G. Balasubrahmaniyam was installed as the clubs president for the year 2011 – 12.
The Club won Makudam as the best club of the dist. 3230. The club applied and got rotary international significant achievement award for karna vidya the best rotary award a club can get.
The club in two fund raisers, collected Rs. 27.90 lakhs with net funds of Rs. 19.03 lakhs addressed mainly to doing projects. The club applied and got allotted a booth in rotary convention in Bangkok and presented the club projects. He initiated action to apply for a matching grant for a community radio station in Neelankarai, along with Nalamdana a service initiative that has led to two more matching grants – one to set up karna vidya technology centre and another as international partner with rotary club of kandy heritage, Sri Lanka. Rtn Bala was recognized as an outstanding Rotarian for the year.
Rotary year 2012 - 2013
Rtn. PHF. Dr. Jaishankar was installed as the 25th President for the year 2012 – 13.Lifetime achievement award was conferred on Mr. Krishnamachari Srikanth and young achiever award was conferred on Mr. Ravichandran Aswin both from the field of sports on charter nite. Karna vidya technology centre with state of art software facility was inaugurated and became functional. A pet project of Dg. Rtn. Raja Sreenivasan, Kuppachiparai panchayat union comprising of 3 villages, where the club in association with nalamdana was doing various service projects was adopted for the year. Mayachangu a short film to educate girl children to protect themselves against sexual assault.
Rotary year 2013 - 2014
Rtn. Ravi Raman was installed as the president for RY 2013 – 14. Detailed eye camp for members of RC Drishti held. Many of the members underwent corrective procedures at Rajan eye care. The club did a heritage tour of Mylapore. The club set up a booth in the RI Convention.
Rotary year 2014 - 2015
Rtn. S. Suresh was installed as the president for the year 2014-15. The club participated in My Flag My India event that found place in the Guinness book of world record. The club also screened a film on sexual abuse to 2000 school girl children.
Rotary year 2015 - 2016
Rtn. Ganeshan Suppiah was installed as the President for the year 2015 – 16. Two women Rotarians were inducted. Contribution to the Rotary foundation over USD 32,000 with the addition of 1 major donor and 2 PHF’s. Two Global grants under Wash in Schools (WINS) were implemented at Avvai home and Government higher secondary school at okkiam thoraipakkam benefitting 1762 girls and 1000 boys. Further another Global Grant of USD 1,33,000 was implemented in 12 schools benefitting 3450 girls, 3300 boys and 400 teachers. Karna Vidya Foundation, under the auspices of the club was set up as an independent trust.
Rotary year 2016 - 2017
Rtn. P. S. Srikumar was installed as the 29th president for year 2016-17. Installation was at the Rain tree on 19th June 2016. In October Mythreem Bhajatha – the fund raiser to show case karna vidya received good response and netted a gross amount of Rs. 3.5 lakhs. Sangeetha kalanidhi designate violin maestro Ms. Kanyakumari was felicitated. The East meets West concert by Ms. Kanyakumari and Shri Anil Srinivasan on piano found a packed hall. Rtn Bala joined the Arch Klump Society as a major donor.
Rotary year 2017 - 2018
Rtn.V. Subramaniam was installed as the 30th President of RCMC on the 9th July 2017 at Gandhinagar Club. Service projects included Karna Vidya, Thendral FM Station, Water shed project in Krishnagiri under one of the largest Global grant of the district , Eye screening camps, Breakfast for Govt School children, Literacy and WINS programmes, RYLA by Rotaractors for the Interactors, international trips to Bhutan, Vietnam and Cambodia, Cricket Fellowship, Visit by Rotarians from Kenya etc. TRF Contribution of USD 60,000. For the sake of honour was presented posthumously to Late Dr. Hari S Ramesh and Dr. Padmaja Hari - Karna Vidya Founders. The Pathfinder Award was awarded to Kartik Sawhney a Visually Challenged Science Evangel and Exemplary Service Award-Shankar Subbiah - Disability Consultant. The club won the Presidential Citation , Diamond Award for Overall Performance and Secretary Rotarian Raghuraman- Best Club Secretary despite his being visually challenged.
Rotary year 2018 - 2019
Rtn. P S Suresh was installed as the 31st President of RCMC on the July 8th 2018 at GRT Convention Centre. The service projects under Karna Vidya Foundation continued with CSR contributions from Olam International, Technip and Tech Mahindra. Other service projects included Blood donations camps, WINS under global grants, Water Shed project at Krishnagiri, Social Awareness through screening of Maaya Changu, collaborated with RAPRA & Local Library Authority of Tamil Nadu to promote the Public Libraries, International trips to Kenya. For the Sake of Honour Award - Mr Patrick Alexander Rosario – India’s Finest (Visually Challenged) Accordion Player, Pathfinder Award – Ms Neelam Jain of PeriFerry for dedicating her life for the upliftment of Transgenders and Young Champions Award – Visually Impaired Students – S Sharwin, S Ashwin, K Koushika. The Club was among the Top 5 clubs in the District in terms of number of Awards.
Rotary year 2019 - 2020
Rtn. B. Ramesh was installed as the 32nd President of RCMC on the 7th July 2019 at Crowne Plaza. The service projects included several at Karna Vidya Foundation, Health and eye screening camps, donation of Ultra sound Doppler and fund donation for Covid relief, Life saving critical equipment to Govt. school of Thoracic medicine, continuation of the Water shed project at Krishnagiri district, Literacy projects for Public libraries, Career Counselling courses, workshops, Thendral etc. Rtn Ravi Raman also became an Arch Klump Society member after Rtn Bala. At the charter nite, Music Icon award was given to Smt.K Gayatri, Coach Icon to VK Murugezhilan – Sports teacher at Govt School of Thoraipakkam, Women Icon award went to Smt V Susheela- Correspondent of Avvai Home school and Youth Icon award went to our own Annette S.Nikhil. The club won the Gold Award for Overall Performance and Rtn P. Gopalakrishnan was awarded the Best Club Secretary.
Rotary year 2020 - 2021
Rtn.V. Kanappan was the 33rd Presdent for the Year 2020 - 2021 along with a smart Secretary Rtn.Bharath Kumar Venketesan.On the 6th of July the Vibrant offce bearers along with Presdent had their installation ceremony via Zoom Platform.
Rotary year 2021 - 2022
Rtn.Usha Rajeshwari had turned the 1st Women President of the club and Rtn.Dhanraj.N was the club Secretary delverng her duties as per the Ri theme "Service Above Self". it was an historical year for RCMC to start a 2 New clubs RC Chennai Riveira and RC Madras Elite the 1st exclusve club for the Transgender community believing and promoting Acceptance of all Genders and treating all equally.
Rotary year 2022 - 2023
Rtn. Ramesh Ananth took over as the 35th president of the club on 10th july 2022 at IIT Madras Research park. The theme of the year was "Imagine Rotary".
On 1-7-2023, RCMC participated in the launch of RID organised community economic development programme of "Making of Herbal napkin and marketing it" Training was given to poor women and transgenders.
RCMC participated in the RYLA organised by the district for Transgenders on 07-08-2022.
RCMC sponsored a female candidate for undergoing training in Maruti suzuki driving school and Dorai foundation as a car driver. This was on 17-8-2022, organised by the district women empowerment team under VAHINI scheme.
PP Rtn. Rajagopal was made the honorary member of the club on 20-8-2022.
RCMC participated in the TRF Dinner conducted by the district on 23-9-2022.
On 30-10-2022, RCMC Participated in the "World Polio Day" awareness program conducted by district at Nageswara Rao park, mylapore.
Our Club participated in the District Event called “Sakkaraiya Akkaraiya” to create awareness about Diabetes to general public. This event took place in major metro railway stations on 14-11-2022.
A MOU was signed with Wheels Global Foundation and Pichandikulam forest on 20-11-2022 for collaboration in setting up an Environmental Education Project (EEP) to primarily benefit schools in the neighborhood and extending to the residential, corporate, and trading communities in the neighborhood.
Parallel Music Festival (PMF) 16th Edition sponsored by Nippon Paint was conducted after two years of covid isolation on 4th December 2022. Mr. N. Murali, President Music Academy and Director The Hindu Group Publications Pvt. Ltd., was the chief guest.

RCMC participated in the Rotary Vijay Diwas run conducted by the district on 16-12-2022.
On 23-01-2023, RCMC & Rotary Club of Madras East along with Dr. MGR Janaki college for women conducted "SOLE" Self Organised Learning Environment" The future of learning for the Deaf and Dumb students using Chat GPT.
The much-appreciated Global Grant project (GG 1636771 by RI “Kuppachiparai Water Shed Development project” was handed over to the village water shed management committee members of Kuppachiparai on 30th Jan 2023 in the presence of DG Rtn. Dr. Nandakumar in the presence of Rotarians from Chennai, Krishnagiri, Hosur, Salem and officials from National Agro Foundation and NABARD.
On 4-2-2023, RCMC and Pichandikulam forest kickstarted the environmental education project for school children in the lush green forest cover of Tholkappiyar poonga.This was attended by the partnering agency representatives from Wheels global foundation, pichandikulam forest, RCMC and rotarians from RID 3232.
RCMC had the privilege of accompanying Rtn. Dr. Haresh Asnani - TRF Cadre review member and technical advisor - Disease prevention & treatement from 10-3-2023 to 12-3-2023. He visited our GG project orange GG 2014900. This is one of the two GG projects our club is doing. The other GG project is with number GG 2016089. The total value of these two projects are USD 3,02,165. Rtn. Dr. Haresh Asnani visited the orange vision centre at Padappai and their base hospital at Pammal. On 11-3-2023 Dr. Haresh Asnani went through the basic elements of this project from conceptualisation, implementation, book keeping, scalability and sustaianability and appreciated every aspect of it. He gave a 10 out of 10 for this project. On 12-3-2023 Dr. Haresh Asnani attended our club meeting at Boat Club, flags were exchanged with him. He appreciated our club for the good work we are doing through project Orange. The whole credit goes to Rtn. Ganeshan project chairman and Dr. Ashok Rangarajan who contributed their time and expertise along with PDG Muthu palaniappan in taking up this ambitious project.
RCMC members visited kuppachiparai GG watershed project site on 17-3-23 along with Mrs. Jaishree of Rotary News Trust to cover the activities we did there. This report appeared in May 2023 edition of Rotary News.
RCMC along with Rotract Club of Drishti conducted a medical camp for the inmates of Tamilnadu Association for the blind in Tondiarpet on 1-4-23. Around 80 people were screened for general checkup and medicines prescribed.
RCMC celebrated its charter and Awards Ceremony on 13th May 2023 at Hotel Hablis, Guindy. PDG Rtn. Krishnaswami was the chief guest of the evening. The following were recognised and awarded for the exemplary work they had done in their field:
- For the sake of honor award was given to Padmashri Nritya Kalanidhi Dr. Narthaki Nataraj - Bharata Natyam Exponent & Member state planning commission, TN for her exemplary work towards the art of Bharata Natyam.She is the first transgender person to receive the Padmashri award.
- For the sake of honor award was given to Shri. G. Gopalan, founder and managing trustee, Akshaya trust for the work done by him for destitute senior citizens.
- Social influencer award was given to Shri. Kubendiran an auto driver for propagating the importance of preserving the environment through his auto. He is an organ donor and promotes tree plantation. He has transformed his auto into a small garden by having mini plants, donates a part of his earnings to old age home, promotes reading habit etc.
- Vocational excellence award was given to Smt. K. Suguna a blind tamil language teacher in Mahindra International School. Inspite of her handicap she rose to the level of becoming a teacher at the renowned Mahindra International School. She is an inspiration for many blind people and students. This award was given to her infront our club sponsored students of Rotary Club of Drishti to instil confidence in the minds of students and enforce that education can take them to levels which they cannot imagine.
On 17-6-2023, RCMC organised a trip for the students of Avvai Home (interact school of RCMC) to Tholkappiyar poonga to create awareness about the importance of environment and preserving it. This was attended by more than 50 students.

Rotary year 2025 - 2026’
Rtn. Kavitha Rajesh took over as the 36th president of the club at a glittering function which took place at Anna University Alumni Club on 29th June 2025. The theme of the year is "Unite For Good". The installation function was attended by over 130 guests which included majority of the co-presidents of Rtn. Kavitha. This exemplifies the bonding she enjoys with her co-presidents.
